The route begins in Vermogno, in a landscape dominated by gigantic piles of cobblestones: the legacy of the massive open-pit gold mine operated during the Roman era.

Leaving the nature reserve behind, you follow the Serra d’Ivrea ridge along trails and side roads winding through the woods. The descent offers sweeping panoramic views and first passes by the picturesque Lake Bertignano before reaching Roppolo. Climbing up to the lookout point at its historic 10th-century castle, you can enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Viverone and the entire morainic amphitheater.

The path then descends toward the historic center of Viverone until it reaches the riverbanks—a little gem sheltered by the hills. Here, among the reed beds that provide shelter for many waterfowl, an ancient past lies hidden: the eastern shore is home to an important prehistoric pile-dwelling site, now protected by UNESCO. The lakeside promenade is the perfect spot to relax, thanks to a particularly mild microclimate that is ideal for cultivating the famous Erbaluce vineyards.

The route continues around the lake to the stilt houses of Azeglio, then heads back toward the morainic ridge in the direction of Piverone, a historic village located along the Via Francigena. As you gain elevation amid breathtaking views, you’ll pass through Zimone and take the dirt road leading to the Monastery of Bose. From this point, two short detours are recommended: one toward Magnano, to admire its ancient medieval Ricetto, and the other toward the splendid Romanesque church of San Secondo.

Finally, the route ends with a return to Vermogno along pleasant back roads that wind through the dense forests of the Serra.
